An Experimental Study on the effectiveness of instruction by demonstration and by booklet in teaching insulin self-injection for diabetics



Abstract
The effectiveness of two instructional method -demonstration and booklet- for teaching insulin self-injection for diabetics were investigated in this study.
The subject of study was 60 adult insulin dependent diabetic patients who entered internal medicine inpatient unit and outpatient clinic in Seoul National University Hospital between Nov. 13th to Dec. 31st 1981.
Patients were assigned to either demonstration group or booklet group after pretest was administered. Post test score were obtained from each group of patients after assigned type of instruction was given.
Pretest and Post test score was statistically processed with analysis of covariance technique.
The results were;
1. Demonstration method to instruct diabetics for insulin self-injection was more effective than booklet method in total sample population._ (statistically significant at P<0.05)
2. Demonstration method was more effective than booklet method for subjects under 50 years and who have middle and highschool educational background (P<0.05).
3. There was no significant difference when compared by different sex, age, educational level and duration of insulin administration among patients instructed by demonstra¡þtion method.
4. There was no significant difference when compared by different sex, age, educational level and duration of insulin administration among patients instructed by booklet method.
